Unique engraving modes

SAUNO machines can engrave in three modes: amplitude, point and combined, as well as using various combinations of these modes. Different modes differ in the way they convey halftones when engraving.

Amplitude mode - in the top photo.
In amplitude mode, the brightness of the halftone is transmitted only by changing the impact force.

The brighter the color is, the stronger is the hit.

Engraving is similar to a photograph.

In SAUNO machines, the impact force is adjusted according to 256 shades of gray.

Dot mode - in the middle photo.
In dot mode, the brightness of the halftone is transmitted both by changing the density of the dots and by changing the impact force.

The brighter the shade is, the denser the dots are and at the same time the stronger is the impact.
Dot mode is different from the so-called bit mode used in some machines.
In bit mode, only the density of the dots changes, and the impact force remains the same.

Dot mode conveys halftones better than bit mode.

Combined mode - in the bottom photo.

Advantages of the combined mode:

-Similar to handmade etching.

-There is no grid of points, as in amplitude mode.

-There are no repeating patterns of dots like in dot mode.

-There is no line by definition.

-The image on the stone is brighter, while the light areas are not broken.Engraving produces more halftones than in dot mode.

1. Flexible resolution settings
Engraving resolution is measured in dots per centimeter or dots per inch (dpi).
In SAUNO machines, resolution corresponds to a step (in millimeters) - the reciprocal value of resolution.

The higher is the resolution, the smaller is the step. Flexible step adjustment ensures high quality engraving on various types of stone and at different image sizes.

2. Adjusting the impact force for individual semitones
In SAUNO machines, the graph of the dependence of the impact force (amplitude) on the brightness of the point can be adjusted in separate segments and even in the form of a curve (see the figure below on the left).
The strength of the impact can be adjusted if necessary for individual groups of semitones.
Moreover, you can selectively engrave individual halftones in the picture, including during a repeated pass.

In the figure to the right, the engraved halftones are highlighted in red in the amplitude graph and image. For example, you can easily set up the machine so that on the first pass you engrave the entire image, and on the second pass only the light areas.

 3. Material list and automatic re-pass
In SAUNO machines you can save a set of settings in memory for each material you work on.
For example, you can save settings for granite under the name "Granite", and for marble you can set different settings and save them under the name "Marble".
The set of settings includes the engraving mode, step (resolution) and impact force, as well as the gap size and the set of halftones selected for engraving.

SAUNO machines can automatically re-engrave the image if necessary.

To improve the quality of the engraving, you can set different settings for the first and second passes.

For example, you can engrave only a portrait on the first pass, and only an inscription on the second with a large gap and a strong impact.
